Comparative Essay

Is This Reality?

As more and more changes take place in today’s society due to the modernizations and all kinds of innovations, I believe that society should take some time to recollect and evaluate the kind of changes these new technologies has brought upon our lives. In my own time, I have come to my own opinions and realizations after having read and discussed the novel, Fahrenheit 451, I have noticed a number of remarkable similarities about the way modernizations such as technology and media has affected society in Montag’s world and in our own.

One of the first similarities I noticed was the parlor TV walls, Millie cherished so much. It sparked my attention when I realized how familiar this sounded. It reminded me of the gigantic movie screens in our movie theatres, the huge plasma TV screens in some of our homes and the projected screens for our television and computers for some. In some cases, these large screens are there for minimal use only but what about those people who skip meals to go watch an ‘important’ game? Or those kids who end up forgetting all about their homework because of some ‘interesting’ cartoon television show?

In close connection with the first similarity, I noticed how close our society was getting a bit like the society we see in Fahrenheit 451: materialistic and detached from society. Although I’m happy to note that reality’s society isn’t as apathetic as those in Montag’s, I have a disturbing inkling some people in society are getting to that point. What about those broken relationships between couples because of a boyfriend’s video game addiction? Or those cases wherein teenagers have more internet friends than friends in their neighborhood and school.

Clearly, society needs a serious rain check to prevent some drastic consequences to humankind. To prevent an apathetic and ill-minded people to dominate a large portion of society would be the doom of our future if we do not act now. So I’m hoping everyone knows the value of things, because if they overlook the value of the important people in their lives, and those rare moments everyone should get to have and instead value the technology they own then what would life mean then and where would the human race be?

Narrative Paragraph

Party Scene: Cause a scene.

At some point in a teenager’s life, there would come a time when they would feel a certain sense of loneliness and a want to belong and be accepted. And this occurrence usually results in a myriad of consequences but most importantly a learning experience. One such event happened to me during my second year in high school when I had this really major fight with my elder sister. At that time, I believed my family sided with my sister and decided to alienate away from them. Something I consider as stupid and childish now was something I considered as something really smart then so I kept telling myself to ally myself with my friends to prevent our relationship to sour like the one I had with my sister. So this one time, I went for a night out with my classmates. We had dinner at a pizza parlor down in IT Park at around 8 in the evening and enjoyed our meal while talking. Eventually some of my friends ended up getting bored and asked us if we wanted to move around so we walked around IT Park and met up with more friends who planned to go to someone’s house to party. During our stay in the house, we were encouraged to drink alcohol and so I eventually ended up feeling woozy. Luckily, I was still in the right state of mind to call my dad to pick me up before I ended up getting drunk. At the end of the night, I realized how stupid my actions were and how irresponsibly I dealt with myself just for the want to please my friends and the desire to get away from my problems.

Cause and Effect Paragraph

Major Major

Living a life as part of the majority gives one more opportunities to showcase one's self. Born into a society where most of the people are Filipinos brought up as Roman Catholic Christians really gave me a lot of opportunities to be accepted as almost anything I choose to be. At three years of age, I was sent to an exclusive school where I grew up in until I graduated as a sixteen year-old in high school. During these years, I felt free enough to flourish and grow into the ideal person I wanted to be. With everyone around me supporting my endeavors and encouraging me to do my best in everything I chose to undertake, I could not feel anymore happier. In a way, I could say that being a part of the majority influenced the way I think. Maybe being part of this society drove me to do things under everyone else’s radar but however it turns out to be though, I’m happy with the way I live at present: accepted, loved and being encouraged to pursue my dreams.

Example Essay

Lie School Musical

I highly doubt I would be incorrect to assume that everyone has lied at least once. Except perhaps the Holy Family, we, human beings are subject to a point in our lives where we see ourselves evading the truth to get something in line with what we want. Again if we assume, that no one contests our earlier statements the standing issue is whether or not the act of lying is justifiable.

To most Filipinos, lying would immediately be considered as an act to be frowned upon. But is it really always a bad thing? Or is it just one of the values our Spanish colonizers introduced to our ancestors to tame them and keep them in line during our country’s enslavement. Understandably, lying does have its downside and telling the truth presents transparency. Undeniably though, we can’t always say that telling the truth is the wisest thing to do under certain circumstances.

In my experience some lies can make a person smile and feel confident, a false compliment here and there and voila! You build up someone’s self-esteem. There was this particular time back in my high school days when I paid my friend some consolation after she lost the role in our school play auditions. I told her how the role she was trying out for was already filled by a really talented choir member and that no matter how good she sang, the judges had already chosen a person and just played a deaf ear to the other students who auditioned when in fact, the reason for her disqualification was because the song she chose didn’t actually compliment her vocal range. Having done this, my friend felt better and thought less of her broken self-esteem.

On the other hand, Lying does have its harmful effects; in my experience mentioned above, I was really happy my friend felt better after I consoled her but I couldn’t help but wonder if she would have been accepted if I had told her the problem before she auditioned.

Then again, everyone is born with the right to choose, a right that needs to be used responsibly and wisely. In this case, lying can be justified based on the motives of the person lying; if you lie to make someone feel better then the lie can be considered as good but if you lie for the sake of your own selfishness then its time you go and reflect upon your actions before you drag others down with you.
